Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia claimed a historic victory in the women’s 100m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, becoming the world’s fastest woman.
Competing in pouring rain at the Stade de France on Saturday, Alfred finished in 10.72 seconds, ahead of the USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson (10.87) and Melissa Jefferson (10.92), who took silver and bronze respectively.
This remarkable win marks Saint Lucia’s first-ever Olympic medal, a significant achievement for the small Caribbean nation that has sent 31 athletes to the Games over the past 30 years. Alfred, known for her modesty and incredible speed, set a national record with her time, though it seemed almost insignificant compared to her monumental victory.
The 23-year-old’s rise to Olympic champion has been swift. She won a silver medal at the Youth Games in 2018, dominated the American college scene at the University of Texas, and secured the World Indoor 60m title in Glasgow earlier this year.
Now, she stands as the Olympic champion, etching her name in history and becoming a national hero for Saint Lucia.
