Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, two of Ghana’s most prominent football clubs, are gearing up for a challenging start to the new Ghana Premier League season.
Hearts of Oak face a demanding opening stretch, kicking off their campaign at home against newcomers Basake Holy Stars. They’ll then travel to Heart of Lions before hosting Bechem United. A trip to Nations FC follows, with Aduana FC visiting on matchday five.
Off the field, the club’s board recently inspected a new commercial complex, signaling their ambition to enhance the club’s global competitiveness. However, supporters remain focused on on-pitch success as the priority.
Majority shareholder Togbe Afede XIV has emphasised the club’s commitment to excellence in play, though Hearts have yet to commence their pre-season training.

“We know that it doesn’t take only infrastructure but we need solid management, we will continue to work at it. We need a solid technical team and we will work at it as well. We need solid group of players and we are working at it. We want to assure fans that management is committed, board is committed to assembling the best squad possible.”
On the other hand, Asante Kotoko, who finished in the top half last season despite a subpar campaign, are looking to improve their fortunes.
Their season begins with an away fixture against Karela United in Tamale. They’ll then host Nsoatreman FC and Young Apostles at the Baba Yara Stadium, before traveling to face Berekum Chelsea and Accra Lions FC.
Unlike Hearts, Kotoko have already started their preseason preparations. The club is also working on upgrading their training facilities to meet higher standards, balancing infrastructure development with their quest to reclaim dominance in Ghana’s top flight.
The Reds who survived with an interim management setup last season are expected to have a change in the club’s administrative structure and activities.
Sole owner and life patron of the club, Otumfuo Osei Tutu is expected to instruct a new team of management and board members to run the affairs of the club.
Hearts of Oak finished 14th as Asante Kotoko finished sixth in the 2023/2024 Ghana Premier League. They will meet on weeks 13 and 30 for the Super Clash.
Both clubs are navigating the dual challenges of improving their facilities and preparing for a competitive start to the season, each hoping their efforts will translate to success on the pitch.
