Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has sent a strong warning to Chelsea captain Reece James, cautioning the right back to save his Chelsea career this season.
Having joined Chelsea at age six, James fulfilled a boyhood dream when former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino named him as the club’s captain.
Hampered by injuries in the past two seasons, James has yet to live up to expectations and was eventually left out of England’s squad for the 2024 European Championships.
William Gallas believes Malo Gusto’s form coupled with James’ injuries should be enough to propel James towards his best again.
“Reece James is going to have to come back to his best because Malo Gusto was excellent for Chelsea last season.

“Even though James is the captain, I think there are question marks about whether or not he will start because of his injury problems and Gusto’s form,” he said.
The former France defender also offered a little advice for the Chelsea captain, calling on him to show his capabilities in the upcoming season.
“I think this will be a crucial season for Reece James. How old is he now? 24? Time flies. James has to be careful.
“He has to be careful because he’s had too many injuries over the last few years and there are doubts about his ability to play 38 games in a season. He will need to demonstrate that he is capable of doing that, but I think it will be really difficult for him,” he added.
James has already been shifted to the middle in new coach Maresca’s first two preseason games and he’ll hope Maresca is able to bring him back to top form.
