A Former Commissioner at the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Emile Short has asked the political parties and their agents to play their roles well to ensure smooth elections this year.
Mr Short expressed confidence in the ability of the Electoral Commission to deliver a free transparent, and fair election this year.
He expressed the hope that the commission would prove to Ghanaians that the polls would be conducted in a free and fair manner.
Speaking in an interview with TV3’s Beatrice Adu on Tuesday, July 30, he said “I have confidence in the electoral commission, I am hoping that they will prove to the nation that the elections will be conducted in a transparent, free, and fair manner.”
“The party agents and everybody involved in the elections should make sure that they do their duties diligently to make sure that the whole process is done in a very transparent manner,” he said.
Recently, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission Jean Mensa assured political parties that the Commission will maintain its credibility and ensure free and fair elections come December 7.
Addressing Members of Parliament on Friday, July 19 Jean Mensa said the EC would in no way effect any change in the election results.
According to her, this will be difficult for the commission to do as parties would have been presented with copies of the actual results by polling agents.
“I would like to assure you that there is absolutely no way that at the helm of affairs the commission can change anything because the documentation comes from the ground and we believe that you have copies,” Jean Mensa said on the floor of the House.
She continued: “This is message that we are sending and we continue to send to officers on the ground but thankfully you have your agents there so with the right training, they should be able to scrutinize some of these things and ensure that there is integrity at every level of the processes.”
The EC chairperson called on political parties to thoroughly train and educate party agents about the electoral processes.
“We would like to call on you to do a thorough education of your agents to ensure that they scrutinize and ensure integrity all across the chain…there’s nothing more than we can declare than what comes to us,” she added.
