She’s the first female secretary general of the East African communities and Veronica Nduva aims at strengthening economic integration that encourages innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation among member states.
The East African Community (EAC) is a regional intergovernmental organisation of eight (8) partner states, with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
Member states of the East African Community are Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania.
In 24 years, the EAC has achieved significant feats, including the establishment of a single customs territory, which has reduced the time of transporting goods from member countries from 21 days to seven days at a reduced cost.
The bloc has also ensured visa-free and work-free permits for member states.
The East African Community’s current Secretary-General, Veronica Nduva, is the first female in that role and was sworn into office last month.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 6th mid-year coordination meeting of the African Union in Accra, she called on African leaders to commit to targets set by the AU.
” we have been able to achieve these feats in East Africa because of the willingness of the leaders. The heads of states so it is important for the heads to have a political will and commitment to the decisions that will better the lives of the people” she said.
She acknowledged the daunting task ahead of her as the first female Secretary-General for the East African Community.
“I know my predecessors will be marked based on the work I do so I know and understand the gravity of the role I am in. That’s why I came here to observe and take a cue. We are doing well and it can only get better. I will like to encourage every young girl out there that they should take up challenges to be better people no matter the situation “.
The East African Community is home to an estimated 302.2 million citizens, with a land area of 5.4 million square kilometres and a combined gross domestic product of US$312.9 billion.
