Weghorst nets late winner as Netherlands edge Poland in Euro 2024

Wout Weghorst scored a dramatic late winner just two minutes after coming on, as the Netherlands began their Euro 2024 campaign with a victory against Poland on Sunday in Hamburg.

Poland, missing their all-time top scorer Robert Lewandowski due to a thigh injury, took an early lead when Adam Buksa headed home.

Despite the setback, the Netherlands, who had been dominant, eventually equalised through Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, whose deflected shot found the back of the net.

The Dutch continued to create chances, with Gakpo missing a close-range opportunity from a Nathan Ake pullback before halftime.

In the second half, Ronald Koeman’s side maintained their pressure, but Poland’s goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny made crucial saves, denying Denzel Dumfries. Youngster Xavi Simons also came close.

Just as it seemed the match would end in a draw, former Manchester United striker Weghorst, introduced in the 81st minute, scored the decisive goal with a close-range finish moments after coming on.

This crucial win sets a positive tone for the Netherlands, who face France next in Group D on Friday. Poland will be looking to bounce back when they play Austria on the same day.
