For example, this summer in Germany, several Ghanaians will be playing for various European countries, drawing significant attention from their homeland.
Here are some notable players of Ghanaian descent to look out for in the much-anticipated tournament.
Netherlands: Memphis Depay, Jeremie Frimpong Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey
The Netherlands would have Memphis Depay whose father is Ghanaian and who has spent many of his holidays in recent years in Ghana undertaking charity work. His teammate Jeremie Frimpong was born to Ghanaian parents too. Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo has Ghanaian roots through his dad and will compete for a spot in attack with Brian Brobbey who was once courted for the Black Stars.
England: Kobbie Mainoo
For England, Kobbie Mainoo is expected to be a key player even in his teens and there is no doubt his Ghanaian family would be rooting for him. With initial reports suggesting strong interest from the Ghanaian FA the 19-year-old midfielder has opted for the Three Lions and his recent performances for Manchester United in the just-ended season is a testament to his value.
Spain: Nico Williams
Then there is Nico Williams, considered one of Spain’s best players. His brother, Inaki, plays for Ghana, but the pacey forward has defied the odds by representing La Roja as a Black player, a rare development in Spanish football.
Austria: Kevin Danso
RC Lens defender Kevin Danso whose parents are Ghanaian would represent Austra having played for them at multiple youth teams. Under experienced manager Ralf Rangnick, the center-back is poised to serve fans with his blocks and tackles.
Switzerland: Kojo Antwi-Duah
For Switzerland, Kojo Antwi-Duah will feature in the national team after being named in their final squad. He joins a roster of players with diverse nationalities, including Denis Zakaria and Breel Embolo, whose roots trace back to Africa.
