Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has promised to introduce a programme dubbed ‘reclamation bond’ to compel small-scale miners to comply with environmentally friendly measures as a means of employment.
This programme, he said is expected to help restore degraded forest cover as a result of illegal small-scale mining practices.
“When you work, you save the little that you have. And so, when you are done digging the gold, you cover the pit before you go for your earnings.
“If you don’t fill the pit, the money will be given to someone else to fill it. It is an arrangement that has been made” he said when he met small-scale miners on Tuesday, June 11.

Mr Mahama also promised that the next NDC administration will revamp the cocoa sector.
They will ensure the effectiveness of the oil and gas sector. We must do these with posterity in mind, he added.
“?More than 40% of gold export is from the small-scale sector and so we must not downplay its existence,” he said.
