Asamoah Gyan cites his commitment to giving back as the driving force behind his decision to enter politics following his retirement from football.
Having captained the Black Stars and netted a record 51 goals for Ghana, Gyan underscores his longstanding aspiration to contribute his wealth of experience from his 20-year career to society.
Appointed as Chairman of the Sports Subcommittee of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s Manifesto Team ahead of the 2024 presidential election in December, Gyan discloses that he was approached by the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to share insights on advancing Ghanaian sports.
Upon presenting his ideas, Gyan recounts being entrusted with chairing the subcommittee due to the merit of his proposals.
Reflecting on the perceived political implications of his involvement, Gyan states, “So I was invited to contribute my ideas, they were pleased with it and asked me to chair the committee. But people affiliate everything to politics.”
He urges individuals not to be dissuaded by potential criticism, emphasising the importance of taking action to make a positive impact.
“If you have something to help, do it. Don’t look at what people will say. There are many people with ideas but because of backlash, people fear to help with what they have,” Gyan advises.
