The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has commenced a significant 33kV line upgrade project with the aim of improving reliability of power supply in the Ashanti Region.
The 11-week project will focus on enhancing the existing 33kV line from Ridge BSP through the Kaase Substation to the Boadi Substation of the company.
The project is being undertaken by Indian firm Arvensis Energy Private Limited, according to officials from ECG.
When completed, the upgraded transmission lines will have increased capacity to transmit more power, thereby enhancing the overall reliability of electricity supply across the region.
The manager of network maintenance for Ashanti Sub-Transmission at ECG, Ing Eugene Nyanor, led a delegation to meet with Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah and provided updates on the project’s key components.
These include upgrading conductors from 265mm² to 400mm² to boost power generation and supply reliability, doubling one-phase cables per phase to increase capacity, and installing galvanized steel towers.
While acknowledging that the upgrade work may cause temporary inconvenience to residents due to potential interruptions in regular power supply, Ing. Nyanor assured the public that measures would be implemented to manage these disruptions effectively and ensure overall satisfaction.
“Wherever we anticipate an outage, our PRO will go on air to announce it ahead of time. And then we want to add that, the Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has shown much interest in this project,” he said.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, expressed optimism about the project’s prospects and assured ECG and the contractor of the Regional Coordinating Council’s full support to ensure its success.
He highlighted the project’s importance, especially in light of other upcoming initiatives like the commissioning of the Ameri Plant, which will contribute to stabilizing the power situation in the region.
“This is an important project, and we are happy that it is coming around this time because during the month, if nothing changes, I am very sure the Ameri Plant would also be commissioned.
“If that one is also commissioned, and that would also add up to the efforts that you are making to stabilize the power situation in the region,” he said.
