Friday proved to be a momentous day for Team Ghana at the 2023 African Games as the host nation clinched an impressive eight gold medals across various disciplines.
In Women’s hockey, Ghana secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over Nigeria to claim the coveted gold medal.
Star athlete Joseph Amoah showcased his prowess by clinching gold in the 200m event. Amoah blazed across the finish line with an impressive time of 20.70 seconds, securing the top spot on the podium. Cameroon’s Claude Emmanuel Itoungue Bogognie followed closely behind, earning the silver medal with a time of 20.74 seconds, while Nigeria’s Consider Emmanuel secured the bronze with a time of 20.80 seconds.
In the High Jump event, Cadman Evans Yamoah soared to victory, displaying remarkable consistency throughout the competition. Yamoah’s resilience saw him clear every height with finesse, culminating in a gold medal-winning jump of 2.23 meters.
In boxing, Ghanaian athletes delivered outstanding performances, with Mohammed Aryeetey and Joseph Commey both clinching gold medals. Aryeetey made history by becoming the first Ghanaian boxer to win gold at the African Games since 1991, while Commey secured victory in the men’s 60kg contest.

Adding to Ghana’s boxing success, Mohammed Amadu claimed the nation’s third gold medal in the sport on the night.

Samuel Takyi continued Ghana’s boxing dominance by winning the men’s light welterweight final, securing another gold medal for the country. Takyi’s victory marked a significant achievement, adding an African Games gold to his bronze from the Tokyo Olympic Games.
The Black Satellites rounded off Ghana’s golden day by securing victory in the Men’s football finals against Uganda at the Baba Yara Stadium. Jerry Afriyie’s last-minute strike secured the gold medal for Ghana in a thrilling finale.
With a total medal count of 68, including 19 gold medals, Ghana’s impressive performance at the 2023 African Games has propelled them up the rankings. The nation now sits sixth, just two gold medals short of Tunisia, currently in fifth place on the table. With 29 silver and 20 bronze medals also to their name, Team Ghana’s achievements reflect their dedication and talent on the continental stage.
