Yussif Basigi leads Ghana to second African Games gold

Coach Yussif Basigi has once again showcased his exceptional coaching prowess, securing his second African Games gold medal with a stunning victory for the Black Princesses over reigning champions Nigeria.

Despite facing a formidable opponent, Basigi’s meticulous preparation and leadership shone through as his team overcame an early setback to triumph 2-1 at the Cape Coast Stadium on Thursday night.

Nigeria initially took the lead in the 23rd minute through Edeh Njideka, capitalizing on a Ghanaian goalkeeper error. However, Basigi’s side displayed remarkable resilience, rallying after the break with greater determination and purpose.

Their efforts paid off when Tracey Twum levelled the score in the 77th minute with a powerful shot, igniting hope for a comeback. Ghana continued to press forward, narrowly missing opportunities to secure victory in regulation time.

In extra time, Mukarama Abdulai emerged as the hero, sealing the win with a decisive goal in the 98th minute, sparking jubilant celebrations among the home crowd.

This marks Basigi’s second gold medal at the African Games, following his previous success with the Black Queens in 2015.

His impressive achievements extend beyond this latest triumph, including guiding the team to qualify for the 2024 Women’s World Cup and clinching the WAFU Zone B U20 Women’s Cup. Basigi’s leadership was also instrumental in Hasaacas Ladies’ remarkable journey to the final of the Women’s CAF Champions League in 2021, alongside dominating the Ghana Women’s League with four titles and winning the WAFU Zone B club tournament.
