Twenty persons have been confirmed dead in an accident at Breku on the Kumasi-Accra highway.
The accident, reported to have occurred on Friday around 5pm, involved ford and sprinter buses.
Preliminary report by the police indicates driver of the Ford Transit bus No.GR 6279-24 from Konongo towards Accra with passengers on board was speeding and burst its back tyre. The driver then lost control and run into an oncoming VW LT 35 Bus No. AS 4483-23.
18 passengers consisting of 10 males and 8 females died on the spot, whilst 2 others died on arrival at the Juaso government hospital.
Many others are battling life-threatening injuries and receiving treatment at Juaso Government Hospital, Stewards Hospital at Yawkwei and Konongo municipal hospital.
Drivers of both vehicles have died.
Bodies of the victims have since been deposited at Stewards hospital mortuary Yawkwei near Konongo for identification, preservation and autopsy.
The Kumasi-Accra highway is one of the accident-prone roads and efforts are being done by the National Road Safety Authority and the police to intensify night patrol to reduce speeding and save lives.
