Every Ghanaian child born in an accredited health facility will be given a Ghana Card Number at birth starting Thursday March 14 , the day that the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia officially launched the Ghana Card Number at birth system at the Ga North Municipal Hospital at Ofankor, Accra.
The Vice President said the Ghana Card at birth is not just a unique identification but it is a promise to Ghanaian children of a future where their identity and rights are recognized from their very first breath.
“It’s a testament to our commitment to building an effective, efficient, responsive, and accountable public sector that meets the needs of the Ghanaian citizenry.
“Additionally, it will facilitate access to healthcare, education, and social welfare programmes and other essential services to safeguarding the rights and entitlements of both mothers and children,” he said.
He further explained that the Ghana Card number at birth system promises many benefits which provide documentary evidence of legal identity, documentary, social relationship and rights from birth and ensure social protection.
“It enables effective planning of essential services like health, education and social welfare which supports economic growth, poverty reductions, generate continuous demographic data for better management and sectorial improvement in health and wellbeing,” he said.
