President of Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GECA), Awal Sakib Mohammed has appealed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to pay electrical contractors debts owed to them to enable them to pay their bank loans, suppliers, and workers and take care of their families.
He revealed that times are hard for many contractors whose livelihood has been curtailed by the lack of jobs especially from the government who is the biggest spender. Also, some are unable to cater for their medical bills and are dying needlessly.
Mr. Sakib Mohammed told Helen Appiah-Ampofo on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show that ECG owes the contractors and some are even works that were done during the PDS management era.
“I can tell you for a fact that the jobs are not there. My colleagues and I are all crying for jobs. Government is the biggest spender and the government projects have stalled to extent that payments for jobs done are not even made, so it’s making things worse,” he lamented.
The president of the electrical contractors further sent a message to ECG that ” as far as they are going out there to take money from their costumers who owe them, they should also sit up and try as much as possible to look at us and make sure they pay us”.
He described it as pathetic for ECG to owe the electrical contractors for jobs they did as far back as PDS time.
“Those money have been locked and ECG is telling us they can’t do anything as the matter is in court. So in the coming days, we intend taking steps to address that. We intend to organize a national forum for all electrical contractors to meet and take a collective decision on the way forward” the GECA President revealed.
