The Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has disclosed that changes have been made to the original physical specifications of the Kelni-GVG contract with government as per “belated” demands by the telecommunication networks.
As per the changes, a further layer of protection and security has been added and that will ensure that only signaling information needed for purposes of traffic monitoring will be received by the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the implementing bodies.
“No other information – either voice, SMS, video or data – will be received by Kelni-GVG servers,” Mrs Owusu-Ekuful explained in a statement dated Monday, June 11, 2018.
She expressed government’s commitment to comply with the laws of Ghana in the implementation of the $89 million contract, which has come under scrutiny from civil society, notably IMANI-Africa.
“Government’s revenue will be assured and the privacy of all our citizens will also be protected.
“This is non-negotiable,” she stressed in the statement.
