Former President John Mahama has expressed his condolence to the family of the army captain who was murdered in cold blood by a mob on Monday following a mistaken identity.
Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama was mistaken for an armed robber while jogging with his pistol tucked to his body around 8:30 in the morning at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central region.
But the residents thought he was an armed robber, accosted and lynched him: pictures and videos have emerged depicting how he was brutalised and burnt to death.
Captain M.A Mahama of the 5th Infantry of the Ghana Armed Forces was the detachment commander of troops on operational duties in the general area.
The former president, John Dramani Mahama has described the deceased soldier’s father as a brother.
“My heart goes out to my brother, Capt. Chubby Adam Mahama (Rtd.) on the murder of his son, Capt. Maxwell Mahama. #RestinPeaceMaxwell,” John Mahama tweeted.

In another tweet on Tuesday afternoon, the former Ghanaian leader said, “And my condolences to the wife of Capt. Maxwell Mahama, his young children & to his mother on the loss of her only son. #RestinPeaceMaxwell“.
Ghana’s army on Tuesday morning deployed a high-powered delegation to the town known for engaging in illegal mining (galamsey), which government is waging relentless war against.
Meanwhile, the military high command has directed all military personnel to remain calm while the incident is investigated.
Captain M.A Mahama was survived by a wife and two kids.
