Former France international Marcel Desailly has revealed how his Ghanaian roots influenced one of the biggest decisions of his football career, explaining why he opted to represent France as a teenager.
Born in Accra, Desailly left Ghana at the age of four and moved to Nantes, France, where he began his football development.
In a 1995 interview, the former defender recalled facing a difficult decision at 17 when he had to choose between his Ghanaian identity and French nationality.
Desailly explained that choosing Ghana would have affected his chances of pursuing a professional career in France at the time.
“I chose French because if I chose Ghana, I wouldn’t play anymore in my team. I couldn't begin professional,” he stated.
“Sure that I play for the French national team, but I'm Ghanaian, I'm born in Ghana. I have all my family here,” he said.

Desailly also disclosed that both of his parents are from Osu in Accra, further highlighting his connection to the Ghanaian capital.
The former centre-back enjoyed a decorated career, winning the European Cup with Marseille in 1993 before lifting the trophy again with AC Milan in 1994. He returned to the final with Milan in 1995, but lost to Ajax.
Away from football, Desailly revealed he had bought houses for both his mother and himself in Ghana, underlining his desire to remain connected to his birthplace.
