AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Renard vs Queiroz tactical battle takes centre stage in Bouaké

The tactical battle between Herve Renard and Carlos Queiroz will be one of the key storylines when Cote d’Ivoire host Ghana in a crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Bouaké on Thursday.

Two experienced coaches will go head-to-head with the Group C points at stake, each looking to begin their respective campaigns with a victory.

Renard has returned to the Cote d’Ivoire dugout with a wealth of experience, including leading the Elephants to the 2015 AFCON title. His side will also have home advantage as they look to impose themselves on the Black Stars.

Queiroz, meanwhile, is beginning his second spell as Ghana coach and faces an early test of his rebuilding project.

The Portuguese coach has had to work around a depleted squad, with Ghana without Jordan Ayew, Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo for the encounter.

That could influence Queiroz’s approach, particularly in attack and midfield, with the coach likely to demand greater collective discipline from the players available to him.

Renard, however, will also be wary of Ghana’s attacking potential despite the absences. The Frenchman has described the contest as one that could be decided by small details.

“When you have a match between two big teams, it will be played on details. But we have enough character to approach it,” Renard said.

Queiroz has similarly acknowledged Cote d’Ivoire’s quality while pointing to similarities between the two teams.

“Cote d’Ivoire have players with a lot of power, creativity, [and] skill, who like to play attacking football. I can say the same thing about these qualities for Ghana,” he said.

The midfield battle could prove particularly important, with both coaches expected to look for control and quick transitions while limiting the opposition’s creative players.

For Queiroz, the challenge will be finding the right balance with a new-look Ghana side. Renard, meanwhile, will be seeking to use home advantage and his side’s attacking quality to gain the early initiative.

With both teams determined to make a strong start to the qualifying campaign, the decisions made on the touchline could be just as important as what happens on the pitch.
