AFC Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo has spoken candidly about the racial abuse he endured during the club’s Premier League opener against Liverpool at Anfield, describing the incident as one that “touched a nerve.”
The Ghana international was subjected to racist remarks from a Liverpool supporter as he prepared to take a throw-in near the touchline.
The match was briefly halted, and authorities later arrested a man in connection with the incident. The suspect was released on conditional bail, which includes a ban from attending football matches at any stadium.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Semenyo revealed the emotional toll it took on him.
“I think I’m a strong individual, so when things like that happen, I always just try to move on, but with the Liverpool incident, it definitely, definitely touched a nerve.
"I was nearly at breaking point, to be honest,” the 25-year-old added.
Despite the distressing episode, the 25-year-old responded in remarkable fashion, scoring twice in that same match and later amassing 10 goal contributions for Bournemouth this season. His performances have also been instrumental in helping Ghana secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Semenyo will be looking to continue his fine form when Bournemouth welcome Nottingham Forest to the Vitality Stadium on Sunday.
