Mr Samuel Atta-Mills, the Ranking Member of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, on Friday criticized the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) for allegedly registering the Mills Institute, formerly known as the Atta-Mills Institute, without proper authorization.
The controversy arose during a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sitting in Parliament House, Accra, where members of the Committee questioned the registration process.
Mr Kwame Gakpey, a National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Keta, inquired, “If I’m not related to him, can I just come to your office and register a company in his name?”
Maame Samma Peprah, the Acting Registrar, explained that her office followed laid-down procedures, ensuring no conflicts with existing names and public interest.
“Mr Chairman, we have to ensure that there is no conflict with other names on our register and that it is in the public interest that such names exist,” she said.
However, Mr Atta-Mills, the brother of the late President, Professor John Atta-Mills, expressed disappointment, stating that due procedure wasn’t followed.
“Unfortunately, I have all the documents from your office. Nothing was followed. No rule, rhyme, or reason was followed,” he said, hinting at a potential conflict of interest.
The ORC’s Acting Registrar promised to investigate, saying, “Mr Chairman, I am not aware of it. I will look at our system and revert on that.”
