Ghana captain André Ayew found the net for Le Havre AC in their 5-1 defeat to Olympique Marseille on Sunday evening at the Stade Orange Vélodrome in Ligue 1.
Marseille opened the scoring in the 25th minute when midfielder Valentin Rongier struck a precise low shot into the bottom left corner from 20 meters. Shortly after, midfielder Bilal Nadir doubled the lead in the 39th minute, netting his first league goal with a sharp turn and a shot that deflected in off the left post.
Nadir's goal marked a triumphant comeback after a year-long recovery from a ruptured ACL, with the club demonstrating their faith by offering him a new contract.
Just before halftime, Neal Maupay headed in a close-range goal, while Mason Greenwood delivered a brilliant run and assist for Elye Wahi to score Marseille's fourth midway through the second half. Ulisses Garcia sealed the commanding win with a fifth goal for Roberto De Zerbi's side.
In the 85th minute, Ayew headed home a consolation goal for Le Havre, prompting chants of appreciation from the home crowd. Touched by the warm reception at his former home ground, Ayew applauded the fans as he was substituted moments later.
Ayew's emotional return to Marseille
Playing against his former club, Ayew displayed both professionalism and deep emotion. After scoring, he refrained from celebrating and was visibly moved, shedding tears as the Marseille supporters applauded him.
Ayew enjoyed a stellar career with Marseille between 2007 and 2015, scoring 60 goals in 209 appearances and winning two League Cups. His connection to the club is familial, as his brother Jordan Ayew and father Abedi Pele also played for Marseille.
