Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah says his ultimate goal is to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy with the Falcons of Jediane.
Appiah reflected on their qualification journey and said his team will prepare adequately for the tournament in Morocco this December.
Speaking on Kumasi-based radio station Akoma FM, the Ghanaian coach noted that he aims to clinch the title for the North African state and not just participate in the tournament.
Winning the trophy is my goal. By God’s grace, we have qualified. We will prepare thoroughly to ensure we have a strong team before the AFCON. Once you’re in, you aim for the cup rather than coming out with nothing.
Sudan have been rejuvenated under the former Black Stars coach, securing qualification to the 2025 continental tournament ahead of Ghana and Niger in Group F, and sitting atop their 2026 World Cup qualifiers group with 10 points.
Despite the conflict at home, Appiah has brought hope to the Sudanese people on the field amidst the ongoing civil war. The insecurity in the region meant Sudan have had to play all their home matches at neutral grounds, mostly in Morocco, but that has not stopped them from playing their best football. Sudan defeated Ghana in Morocco during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
No impossibility in football
Citing Ivory Coast’s dramatic and historic victory at the 2023 AFCON, Appiah highlighted the unpredictability of football. He believes no team should be looked down upon in the modern game.
Nothing is impossible in football. No team should be underestimated.
The tournament in Morocco will feature an expanded number of teams – 24 nations.
