Three crew members on board a Ghanaian registered fishing vessel have been kidnapped by pirates last Thursday afternoon in the Western Region.
According to the Ghana Navy, the victims, all Chinese, were on board “MENGXIN 1” in the country’s territorial waters when seven pirates at about 5:53 pm took over the fishing vessel amid sporadic gun firing, forcing the victims and their Ghanaian counterparts to go into hiding in the bowels of fishing craft.
A statement signed by Director General of the Department of Public Relations, Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Brigadier General E. Aggrey Quashie, copied the Ghanaian Times, confirmed the attack on the fishing vessel and kidnapping of the crew.
The spokesperson said information of the incident has been shared with neighbouring countries through the sub regional bloc, ECOWAS Multinational
Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone F, in Accra, under the Yaounde Architecture for maritime security, to alert neighbours to also look out for the kidnappers.
Brigadier General Quashie said the rest of the crew was safe after the terrified ordeal and the ship was safely docked at Tema Fishing Harbour.
The statement said the Marine Police and the Eastern Naval Command’s Naval Intelligence personnel have conducted initial interrogations, confirming the incident and the suspected kidnapping.
The GAF indicated that “following their departure, the crew came out of hiding to find the captain, chief mate, Chief Enginee, all Chinese nationals missing.”
The crew, the statement noted, had to sail closer to land before reporting the incident because there was no mobile network coverage at sea.
The GAF noted that “meanwhile, all efforts are being made
by intelligence agencies to locate and free the crew of the ship.”
The Gulf of Guinea, it is recalled, recorded 39 pirate attacks between January and October 2021.
According to the Ghana Navy, the pirates have shifted their focus from hijacking oil vessels to kidnapping seafarers and demanding ransom.
The latest of such attacks happened on October 11, 2021, when personnel of the Ghana Navy successfully warded off an attempted pirate attack on a Tuna vessel off the south of Aflao, in the Volta Region.
