University of Seychelles delegation visits Ghanaian universities

 A Delegation from the University of Seychelles (UniSey) has ended its land­mark visit to four universities in the country.

The universities include the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Central University, University of Education, Winneba and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The one week-long tour was led by the Vice Chancellor of UniSey, Ms Joëlle Perreau, and her team, including Dean of Faculty of Arts & Social Development, Dr Justin Zelime, Marketing, Communica­tions & Stakeholder Engagement, Mr Shaun Berlouis, Director of Marketing, Communications & Stakeholder Engagement, Ms Dolivette Chang-Ko.

The exercise forms part of efforts in strengthening education­al ties between the two countries, a statement issued by the Hon­orary Consul of the Republic of Seychelles in Ghana, Mr Kwame Acquah, copied the Ghanaian Times said.

It also represented the first activation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed be­tween UniSey and KNUST, which follows the broader educational cooperation agreement between the two countries.

In the Central University at Prampram, the delegation met with Mr Stephen A. Mickson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university, and his team to discuss efforts geared towards fostering academic collaborations.

Some of the initiatives included faculty and student exchanges, joint research projects, and the development of shared academic programmes.

Both institutions expressed optimism about the potential benefits of such partnerships and committed to exploring further opportunities for cooperation.

At UEW, with the Vice Chan­cellor, Professor Stephen Jobson Mitchual, and his team, they explored collaboration opportuni­ties in exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, and curric­ulum development, particularly in media, communication, and computing.

After a comprehensive discus­sions, the two institutions settled on drafting a MoU, form a work­ing committee, as well as explore funding opportunities.

The progress of these initiatives would be subjected to review as follow-up meetings would be held to measure their effectiveness.

At UCC, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor John­son Nyarko Boampong, highlight­ed potential areas for collabora­tion, including academic exchange and research collaboration, focusing on African Erasmus-like opportunities, Blue Economy and Environmental Sustainability research initiatives

Other areas included developing innovative academic programmes in addressing governance, sustain­ability, and economic transforma­tion, collaboration in Peace and Conflict Resolution and special­ised legal studies.

Both institution further agreed to form a joint committee to outline a formal MoU, exchange detailed programme syllabi, and plan a follow-up virtual meeting within three months to monitor progress.

At KNUST, the Vice Chan­cellor, Mrs Rita Akosua Dickson, with the delegation discussed how to implement the MoU, which was previously signed between UniSey and the institution.

On the cultural front, the dele­gation was honoured with a spe­cial dinner in Kumasi under the auspices of the Asantehene, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Looking Ahead

The educational tour under­scores the growing diplomatic and academic ties between Seychelles and Ghana, positioning both na­tions as key partners in advancing higher education and knowledge exchange in Africa.

The collaboration between these institutions is expected to yield substantial benefits for stu­dents and faculty from both coun­tries, opening up new avenues for academic exchange, research collaborations, and cultural under­standing

With optimism, both countries are hopeful the future of the part­nerships created would transform educational initiatives that can address shared challenges and op­portunities in the global academic landscape.

The educational cooperation between Ghana and Seychelles stands as a testament to the grow­ing importance of south-south partnerships in higher education and the recognition of the value that diverse academic perspectives bring to solving global challenges.

The efforts of the Honorary Consulate of Seychelles in Ghana is commendable for facilitating the entire visit, from the delegation’s arrival to their departure today, ensuring productive engagement between the academic institutions.
