The Government of Ghana has issued a firm condemnation of the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing the action as a “direct assault on democratic governance” and an unacceptable attempt to subvert the will of the people.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Ghana expressed “deep dissatisfaction” with the coup carried out by elements of the Bissau-Guinean military, which disrupted the electoral process following the country’s presidential and legislative elections held on 23 November 2025. The coup has stalled the release of official election results, which were expected on 27 November.
Ghana warned that the intervention had “dangerously interrupted the democratic trajectory” of Guinea-Bissau and urged the perpetrators to immediately restore constitutional order. The government emphasised that any disputes arising from the election must be resolved peacefully and through “legally recognised mechanisms” rather than force or intimidation.
Accra also called for the protection of all civilians and foreign nationals in the country, with particular concern for members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Election Observation Mission. Ghana insisted that their security and safe passage must be guaranteed.
The statement further appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions during this period of uncertainty.
Reaffirming its commitment to regional stability, Ghana declared full support for ECOWAS and the African Union as they coordinate a response in line with established protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
