Ghana Football Association (GFA) safeguarding officers Obed Tuffour and Bernice Sarfo Bempah have completed the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding in Sport Diploma.
The graduation ceremony was held during the FIFA Safeguarding Summit at the Home of FIFA, bringing together safeguarding professionals, administrators, academics and experts from across the global football community.
More than 100 safeguarding officers from over 70 Member Associations completed the two-year programme, developed by FIFA in collaboration with The Open University. The initiative forms part of FIFA’s wider effort to ensure football environments remain safe, inclusive and free from abuse, harassment and exploitation.
As part of the summit, Obed Tuffour represented Ghana on an international panel titled “How Safeguarding Officers Can Promote Safeguarding Readiness and Address Challenges within Member Associations.” He joined Alan Stewart of the Scottish Football Association and Cynthia Pucheta of the Paraguayan Football Association.
During the discussion, Tuffour outlined key progress made by the Ghana Football Association in recent years, including nationwide safeguarding awareness campaigns, capacity-building programmes for stakeholders and increased focus on education across different levels of the game.
He also stressed the need to strengthen systems that protect children and vulnerable individuals in football, while encouraging greater collaboration among football bodies to maintain high standards.
The completion of the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding in Sport Diploma is expected to enhance the GFA’s safeguarding framework further as it continues efforts to improve player welfare and protection.
