Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit, presiding over the Dansoman Circuit Court, has remanded a 45-year-old man, Sena Avenyor, also known as Edward Kwabena Botri or Sniper, into police custody for allegedly posing as a military officer and harassing members of the public at Abossey Okai in Accra.
Avenyor pleaded not guilty to four counts, including impersonation of a public officer, unauthorised use of military uniform and preparation to commit a criminal offence, contrary to the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and the Restriction on the Use of Military Uniform and Equipment Act, 1967 (NLCD 177).
Two of his alleged accomplices are currently at large.
According to the facts presented in court by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Portia Nuarko, on September 24, 2025 at about 3:30 p.m., police received information that the accused and two others, all dressed in full military uniform, were harassing and forcibly taking valuables from people at Abossey Okai.
When police arrived at the scene, the two alleged accomplices managed to escape, but luck eluded Avenyor, who was arrested wearing a complete set of military camouflage uniform with the name “BOTWE” embossed on it.
During interrogation, Avenyor admitted he was not a military officer and disclosed his real identity.
Further investigations revealed that he had previously been involved in similar offences and was already facing trial in other courts within the Accra metropolis.
Police investigations also uncovered that, although some of Avenyor’s military uniforms had been seized in earlier cases, he had obtained another set, allegedly bought from a military acquaintance, whose identity he refused to disclose.
Chief Inspector Nuarko told the court that efforts were ongoing to arrest the two remaining suspects to assist in investigations.
The presiding judge ordered the prosecution to expedite investigations before the next adjourned date and remanded the accused into police custody.
The case has been adjourned to October 24, 2025.
