A 52-year-old trader, Ampofo Djan, has been brought before the Dansoman Circuit Court and charged with conspiring and stealing two kilograms of gold from Qilin Liu, a Chinese national.
The case, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, was mentioned on March 20, 2025, but the accused was absent. The court has subsequently adjourned the case to April 15, 2025, instructing the accused to be present for proceedings.
Case Background
According to the brief facts presented in court, Ampofo Djan, a trader residing in Tarkwa, reported to the police on December 11, 2024, that he had entered into an agreement to sell two kilograms of gold to Qilin Liu. The gold was tested at City Link Metals International, but Qilin Liu allegedly failed to make the required payment.
Djan then informed the police that Qilin Liu was lodging at Tang Palace Hotel, leading to Liu’s arrest. However, during investigations, Liu claimed that a second accused, Anthony Turkson had taken possession of the gold.
CCTV footage obtained from the hotel reportedly showed both accused persons entering Liu’s room, with the second accused leaving with a bag believed to contain the stolen gold. Since then, Djan has allegedly failed to assist the police in locating the second suspect.
Djan has been charged with the offense and ordered to appear before the court. However, his absence during the court’s first mention of the case has raised concerns about his whereabouts.
The court awaits his appearance on April 15 for further proceedings.
