A 28-year-old Sales Personnel, Patience Darko, is facing charges of defrauding traders at Okaishie Market in Accra, allegedly extorting goods and cash, totalling over GH¢86,000 through false pretenses.
The accused, who pleaded not guilty to five counts of defrauding by false pretences, under Section 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit.
Allegations against the accused
Court documents indicate that in November 2024, Darko, who works for Multiple Private Limited, a company dealing in cornflakes and coco pops, allegedly collected goods and cash from traders at Okaishie Market under the pretence of supplying them to customers and returning proceeds.
The brief facts presented by the prosecution reveal that Darko obtained GH¢15,597.00 worth of goods from Thomas Ataagoa, a distributor and the first complainant.
GH¢10,850.00 and GH¢7,415.00 in cash from Rita Osei Siaw and Deborah Abbew Williams respectively.
GH¢33,000.00 from Harriet Allotey Arthur and GH¢19,625.00 from Selina Naa Adukai.
The total amount allegedly defrauded from the five complainants stands at GH¢86,522.00.
Darko reportedly failed to deliver the goods as promised and did not return the money. Upon receiving complaints from the traders, a company supervisor, Rebecca Ampoh, reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of the accused.
In her cautioned statement, Darko admitted to collecting the money, but claimed it was stolen from her. However, she neither reported the alleged theft to the police nor informed her employer. Investigations led to her being charged and arraigned before the court.
Bail Conditions
The court granted Darko bail in the sum of GH¢90,000, to be redeemed by three sureties, who must be Public Servants with justified immovable property.
Additionally, the accused is required to deposit her Ghana Card at the court registry and report to the police weekly.
The prosecution has been ordered to file all disclosures and witness statements, with the case adjourned to February 17, 2025 for further proceedings.
