A 43-year-old businessman, Mahama Saani Razak, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢900,000 by the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding a farmer of GH¢1.4 million under false pretenses.
Razak, who resides in Dodowa, is accused of swindling Alhaji Sumani Amadu, a farmer from Larabanga in the Savannah Region, of a total amount of GH¢1,414,000 between March and May 2025.
The bail decision was delivered by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit on Friday, June 28. In granting bail, the court considered submissions from both the defence and prosecution and exercised its discretion under Article 19(2)(c) of the 1992 Constitution.
As part of the bail conditions, the accused must present three sureties — two of whom must be public servants earning not less than GH¢3,000 and residing within the court’s jurisdiction. The third surety is required to justify with title deeds. Additionally, Razak must deposit his Ghana Card with the court registry and report to the police once every month until further notice.
Alleged Fraud
Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, who is prosecuting the case, told the court that Razak claimed to have influence at Jubilee House and promised to secure government jobs for 18 of the complainant’s children, nieces, and nephews in institutions such as the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Revenue Authority, and others.
To facilitate the employment, the complainant allegedly transferred GH¢834,000 to mobile money numbers provided by Razak.
The accused later claimed he could also provide auctioned vehicles — including a tipper truck, a Benz bus, and a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 — and allegedly collected an additional GH¢580,000 from the complainant. None of the promised jobs or vehicles materialized.
Investigations also revealed that the accused used similar tactics to deceive other individuals in Adjen Kotoku and other parts of Accra.
Razak faces two counts of defrauding by false pretense under Section 131(1) of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). He pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the court on June 23.
Adjournment
The case, which was initially heard on June 18 but adjourned due to the accused’s absence, has now been adjourned to August 20, 2025. The court also directed that the case docket be forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Department for advice due to the amount involved.
