After 16 Years, Bawumia Now Ready -Akufo-Addo

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says his vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is ready to be president of Ghana. According to him, Dr Bawumia has gained the needed experience after having served for the past sixteen years.

“And I have no doubt in my mind that my Vice President, who was with me for 8 years in opposition, was the deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana when I came across him and asked him to follow me into politics.

“And I’m sure if I had left him there, he would have been Governor of the Bank, etc, etc, long ago. Eight years in opposition and eight years in government, this man is well prepared today to be president,” he said.

The president said this on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 when he met Organised Labour in Accra, to say thank you to them for their support to his government.

Touching on the need to help Dr. Bawumia to succeed him, he urged Organised Labour to vote for him.

“And my appeal to you is that on Saturday when you go to cast your ballot, look closely at the elephant. It’s not difficult because at the top of the ballot paper is the elephant. It’s right there at the very top,” he said.

DISCRIMINATE

President Akufo-Addo made the point that his government had touched the lives of all the 16 regions.

He outlined some gains his government has achieved, impacting virtually every facet of the Ghanaian economy.

Speaking on health, he said that among other healthcare projects, the famous Agenda 111 initiative will benefit the whole country, ensuring that there is at least a hospital in every district.

On industrialisation, he cited the flagship project, One District One Factory (1D1F) initiative, which was conceived because Ghana’s future is bound with her ability to move from a raw material-producing economy to an industrialising, value-adding economy.

“And that is the origin of the One District One Factory policy. That today, 169 factories have been established under the 1D1F and 159 others are in the process of being operated,” he said.

He also mentioned how the free Senior High School program is benefiting every household across the country directly and indirectly.

“Once again, to re-emphasise the point I’m making, that there’s been nothing discriminatory about anything that I’ve done since I came into office. They’re in every part of the country,” the president remarked.

INVESTMENT 

President Akufo-Addo said his government had invested in expanding the economy. According to him, agriculture, which was “a sluggish 2.8% when I took office in 2017” is “about a 6% average rate of growth” over the seven and a half years.

According to him, in nominal terms, the GDP of Ghana has grown four times since he took office, which created surpluses that have enabled the government to take up social and other interventions.

President Akufo-Addo thanked Organised Labour for what he described as the support he received.

He noted that he called for their support to ascend the throne and it was right that before leaving office, he meets them again to say thank you.

LABOUR

On behalf of Organised Labour, the General Secretary, Industrial and Commercial Union (ICU), Morgan Ayawine commended President Akufo-Addo for remembering the contribution of Organised Labour.

He said the President should help whoever would succeed him to continue to cooperate with the Labour front, even in his retirement.

Meanwhile, the meeting with Organised Labour yesterday ended the President’s 3-day tour of the Greater Accra region, the last of his nationwide Thank-You tour that took him to all the 16 regions.
