Founder and Leader of the Ghana Union Movement, Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly called Osofo Kyiri Abosom, has criticized the government for continuously burdening the ordinary Ghanaian with the introduction of taxes, especially on essential services.
He says the recent 15 percent VAT on Electricity has exposed the current administration’s failure in managing the economy and has given the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led government low marks.
He maintains that the two major political parties, the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party, have failed to live up to expectations despite Ghana being blessed with natural resources.
He has, among other things, proposed the revival of defunct state-owned factories and the introduction of free ports to encourage exports of locally made products.
He spoke in Kumasi during a ceremony to outline his party’s vision ahead of the 2024 elections and officially launch his campaign.
“Nana Addo and Bawumia’s government, I will give them 0.00%; they have done next to nothing. Because you see, when they were coming, this was not the state of the nation. We were a little bit okay, but now things have been jeopardized. Things have changed totally…He himself, Nana Addo, said if another government comes, they will put things in the right direction. So Nana Addo and Bawumia have failed us. And I am praying that they are going.”
“They are not my target; my target is Ghanaians who understand whatever I am putting across to vote for us so that we will come out well from this very slavery because I know when you want to control somebody is where you collect all the person has so that you will be able to control the person. That is why they are putting more taxes. They have taxed mobile money, they have taxed over here, everywhere tax including electricity. So in fact, they are doing more harm than good,” Mr. Andrews said.
He also criticized the feasibility of the 24-hour economy policy proposed by the NDC, citing the lack of available factories to successfully implement such an initiative.
