Former Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong believes the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign will be highly competitive and exciting following the official draw ceremony in Cairo.
Reacting to the draw, the former Super Eagles defender admitted he was excited by the quality of matchups across the groups and expects several difficult contests on the road to the tournament.
“I’m really excited now to see the draw for the qualification groups. I think for Nigeria, we have faced some teams many times before, like Tanzania, Madagascar, and Guinea-Bissau. But also, I think we have some tough groups.
"I’m looking forward to seeing how Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana do against Gambia and Somalia. Overall, I think it’s going to be exciting and a great run-up to the tournament in 2027,” the former Super Eagles defender said.
One of the standout groups from the draw is Group C, where the Ivory Coast and Ghana were paired together alongside Gambia and Somalia.
The clash between Ghana and the Ivory Coast is already being viewed as one of the biggest fixtures of the qualification series.
Meanwhile, Nigeria has been drawn in Group L with Madagascar, Tanzania, and Guinea-Bissau.
