Ghana’s Black Princesses slipped to their first defeat at the WAFU B U-20 Girls’ Championship, falling 3-1 to Nigeria on Saturday.
The team had begun the campaign on a bright note with a 2-0 win over hosts Benin, but a clinical Nigerian side proved too strong in their second Group fixture.
Janet Seimeyeha struck twice while Chiamaka Favour added a late third as the Falconets secured a dominant result in the West African derby. Sarah Nyarko netted Ghana’s only goal.
Nigeria went ahead in the 38th minute when Seimeyeha converted from the spot after a foul in the box. She doubled the lead just before the break, capitalising on defensive hesitation to lift the ball over the Ghanaian goalkeeper.
Nyarko gave the Princesses hope shortly after the interval, reacting quickest to a rebound in the 49th minute for her second goal of the competition.
However, any hopes of a comeback faded two minutes from time when Favour rose highest to head home from a corner, sealing the result for Nigeria.
Ghana will look to get their campaign back on track when they face Benin on Monday, November 10, at 10:00 GMT.
