Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu has urged equal pay for male and female athletes as the Black Queens ended their training boycott over unpaid bonuses.
The Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP made the comments while addressing the controversy surrounding the women’s national team, which had refused to train for two days in protest over delayed payments from the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Each player is reportedly owed $9,500 for their bronze-winning campaign.
“I think we need to treat all athletes equally, irrespective of gender,” Kwakye Ofosu told Joy Sports.
“I even hold the view, it may be controversial, but I think we should be paying equal wages to both men and women athletes.”
He admitted that the delays were regrettable but expressed confidence that the government was working to resolve the issue swiftly.
“Delays are not desirable, of course, and I think we should take steps going forward to ensure that it does not recur,” he said.
The Black Queens trained on Monday after meetings involving Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku and senior officials.
Ghana, who beat Egypt 3-0 in the first leg, will host the second leg of their 2026 WAFCON qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
