Ghana president John Dramani Mahama has opened up on the Black Stars 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification failure.
For the first time in 20 years, the four-time African champions will not be competing in the prestigious continental tournament after finishing last in Group F. Ghana's qualification campaign ended with three draws and three losses from six matches.
Reflecting on Ghana’s qualification failure, John Mahama expressed his displeasure about the team’s inability to qualify for the tournament.
“Failing to qualify for the AFCON was a heart-wrenching for all Ghanaians, as it was the first time in many decades. Ghana has always been a permanent fixture at the tournament, so it was quite painful. However, the boys have made up for it by qualifying for the World Cup” he told Sporty FM in an exclusive interview.
Meanwhile, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament will be held in Morocco between December 2025 and January 2026.
Despite the AFCON setback, the Black Stars has secured qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament to be staged in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Ghana finished on top of Group I, accumulating 25 points from 10 matches, followed by Madagascar (19 points), with Mali finishing third spot with 18 points.
Additionally, Comoros placed fourth with 15 points, where Central African Republic finished fifth on the table with 8 points. Chad emerged as the weakest team in Group I, securing just a point in 10 matches.
