Asante Kotoko return to domestic duty this weekend as they welcome league leaders Heart of Lions to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors are fresh off continental success, having sealed back-to-back wins over Kwara United in the CAF Confederation Cup to progress to the next round against Wydad Casablanca. Before turning focus to Africa again, they face one of the toughest challenges in the Ghana Premier League.
Heart of Lions have been the standout side so far, winning all three of their opening matches to sit top of the table with a perfect record. Obeng Junior, one of their attacking threats, insists they are determined to continue their form in Kumasi.
"We have started on a good note so we are going all out against Kotoko. It’s not a difficult game. we take it step by step. We’ve cleared three hurdles, and Kotoko is the fourth," he told Mo TV.
Lions’ bench brings added intrigue, with head coach Bashir Hayford, a former Kotoko boss who guided them to the 2008 title, and assistant coach Daniel Nii Adjei, a Kotoko legend. Their influence has shaped a Lions side that has dominated recent meetings, winning four of the last six encounters. Kotoko’s last victory over Lions dates back to 2015.
Kotoko coach Karim Zito is determined to change that.
“We are coming to meet a club with the key factor of consistency,” he said. “But we’ve set our target to win the league, and at all costs we should do our best to win this game.”
With Kotoko carrying momentum from Africa and Lions chasing a fourth straight league win, Sunday’s fixture promises to be one of the highlights of Matchday 4.
