Kwara United chairman Kumbi Titiloye has issued an apology to the club’s supporters following their elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup at the hands of Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.
The Nigerian side fell 1-0 in Abeokuta on Sunday after Hubert Gyau struck in the second half to hand Kotoko victory.
The result sealed a 5-3 aggregate win for the Ghanaians, who had edged the first leg 4-3 in Accra. Kotoko’s reward is a second-round clash with Morocco’s Wydad Athletic, with the first leg scheduled for October in Ghana.
Speaking after the defeat, Titiloye admitted his disappointment but sought to reassure supporters of the club’s determination to bounce back.
“We apologise to our teeming and loyal fans and supporters for this unfortunate result. It was never our plan to crash out at this early stage,” he said. “We are poised to come back stronger, make amends in the league, and give our supporters something to cheer about.”
Kwara United’s exit means they have become the second Nigerian club to bow out of this year’s Confederation Cup after Abia Warriors were earlier knocked out by Malian side Djoliba.
The back-to-back eliminations underline another difficult campaign for Nigerian representatives in continental competition.
