Ghana Premier League clubs condemn crowd violence, mourn Kotoko fan's death
Ghana Premier League (GPL) clubs have strongly condemned the recent violence that marred the match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko SC, leading to the tragic death of a Kotoko fan, Francis Nana Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley.In a joint statement following a meeting with the Executive Council on Thursday, February 6, 2025, the 18 top-flight clubs expressed their deep condolences to Frimpongs family and the entire Kotoko fraternity.The clubs reaffirmed their commitment to fair play and sportsmanship while vowing to eliminate hooliganism from match venues. They emphasised that all forms of violence, intimidation, and misconduct would not be tolerated.In response to the incident, the clubs agreed to introduce enhanced matchday security protocols. The details of these measures will be finalized in an Executive Council meeting on Friday, February 7, before being officially released.The GPL clubs also pledged to collaborate with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), security agencies, and relevant stakeholders to ensure that those responsible for the violence are identified and prosecuted.The tragic event has once again highlighted concerns over matchday security in Ghanaian football, with calls growing for stricter enforcement of safety measures at all league centres.
