Mr Abdul-Razak Yakubu, Executive Secretary of Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) says the Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL) has revoked scholarships for 10 students in its operational area.?
He stated that the scholarships were withdrawn due to the affected?students continuous poor performance.?
Addressing stakeholders at its quarterly Community Consultative Committee meeting held at Damang in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality, Mr Yakubu explained that any student whose performance dropped below second class lower first had a warning letter, and they have done that.?
He further said, “These students and their parents have been engaged as well, and we even encouraged them to come back to us for assistance if they had any academic difficulties, unfortunately, none of them took advantage of it”.?
The executive secretary stressed that due to the persistent poor performance of the students, they had no choice than to terminate the scholarship, adding, “we want this to be a lesson to others that scholarships are not awarded to underperforming students”.?
“Scholarships were for students who consistently delivered their best and they expected the current recipients to maintain a high standard so they could continue to benefit from the programme”, he advised.?
He said: “Another exciting news that we had to share with our stakeholders is that, though we have all heard that Gold Fields will be handing over the Damang operation to the state in April next year, we will continue to support our scholarship beneficiaries until they complete their education”.?
Mr Yakubu updated stakeholders on its ongoing projects and programmes, said at Bompieso, they recently completed a three-unit classroom block which had been handed over to the community.?
On the water project currently underway in the Damang host community, he said “This is one of the biggest water projects we have done, costing us over $300,000 and it is a partnership between GFGF and World Vision Ghana”.?
This project, he explained, would provide the entire community with access to water, and they would be delighted to hand it over before the year ends.?
Mr Timothy Ofori, Municipal Director of Health Services for Prestea Huni-Valley, presented a plaque to the GFGF for the significant contributions they have made to improve upon healthcare services in the municipality.?
He said, “We believe the Gold Fields Ghana deserve recognition and encouragement to continue their good work”.?
