The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over corruption and corruption related activities at the National Service Authority (NSA).
In a petition which has been leaked the organisation is calling on the OSP to launch a full-scale investigation into a series of corruption and corruption-related activities within the NSA.
“This petition follows months of investigations by the MFWA’s independent investigative journalism project (The Fourth Estate) into activities at the NSA, which have revealed a series of corruption-related activities perpetrated within the NSA that deprive the state of millions of cedis each year since 2018,” it said.
The organisation states that its action is based on evidence obtained during investigations. It attached all the evidence to the petition.
Among other things, the Fourth Estate investigation found the creation and use of thousands of fake student index numbers that are assigned to supposed graduates from various tertiary institutions.
They uncovered that each year since the 2018/2019 service year, thousands of fake student index numbers are created and assigned to non-existent students who are then supposedly enrolled in the scheme and posted to do national service.
“The institutions for which the bulk of such fake student index numbers are created and used for fake enrolment and postings, include the University of Education, Winneba (UEW); the University of Cape Coast (UCC); the University for Development Studies (UDS); Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST); Tamale Technical University; among others,” it added.
Meanwhile, the NSA has sought a court injunction stopping the publication of the investigation by the Fourth Estate.
