The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has affirmed his commitment to fighting illegal mining, known as “galamsey,” indicating that his administration will see to the end of the menace.
At the Ghana Police Regional Command Conference, COP Yohuno stated that emerging crimes, such as illegal mining, pose a significant security risk, particularly in the nation’s forest reserves and mining communities.
“Armed criminals have carried out brutal attacks on innocent people, including forest guards, without justification. This lawlessness must not be allowed to continue. We are declaring war on crimes related to illegal mining, and I expect every regional commander to take decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice” he stated.
COP Yohuno further raised concerns about the growing security concerns surrounding attacks on mobile money vendors, indicating that these criminals target innocent citizens who are simply trying to earn an honest living, where in some cases, these attacks result in loss of lives.
“We must adopt innovative crime-fighting strategies and countermeasures to end this menace. Criminals constantly seek ways to stay ahead of law enforcement, but we must be proactive in outmaneuvering them” he said.
Addressing the issue of the Bawku conflict, COP Yohuno said the issue has profound national security implications, calling on law enforcement officers to fashion out measures to restore lasting peace in the area.
“Many of you have extensive experience in conflict resolution and international peacekeeping. We must apply this expertise to unite feuding factions and end this long-standing conflict.”
This is a collective call to all of us to serve with diligence and dedication. Together, we must work tirelessly to enhance the security of our country and fulfill the tasks placed on us by the people of Ghana” he added.
*24-Hour Policing System*
Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has announced that in line with the government’s commitment to driving economic progress and ensuring that the nation remains competitive in the global economy, it has established a dedicated Secretariat for the 24-hour Policing System.
According to the minister, this initiative is crucial as the country recognizes the need to bolster security to keep pace with the growing demands of a modern and thriving economy.
He added that this Secretariat aims to implement robust and sustainable policing models that ensure security is guaranteed around the clock, saying, “Whether it is in our bustling cities or our rural areas, economic activities do not cease, and neither can our vigilance. We are laying the groundwork for a system that is dynamic and responsive to the unique challenges posed by a 24-hour economy.
As we embrace this new approach, the safety of businesses, workers, and citizens will be prioritized, ensuring that every hour of the day is protected.”
Mubarak Muntaka reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry and the government to the continuous improvement of our security architecture, saying, “government is dedicated to making sure that every Ghanaian, every business, and every visitor can carry out their activities in an environment of peace, safety, and security. The security of this nation is our collective responsibility, and it is through partnership, innovation, and inclusivity that we will continue to safeguard the progress we have made.”
