The Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) has issued a press release expressing concern over social media videos and media reports concerning an incident at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department during a visit by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on April 22, 2025.
The association states that the circulated information does not accurately reflect the events that transpired. According to DATTH, the Head of the Accident and Emergency Department was questioned by the Minister about the management of a patient referred to the hospital.
The doctors’ association explained that the discussion about the patient’s condition and management challenges escalated into a verbal exchange.
DATTH strongly defends their colleague, asserting that he has consistently demonstrated professionalism and dedication to patient care at the Accident and Emergency Department.
The association criticizes the media’s portrayal of the situation, which they believe has unfairly tarnished the reputation of a hardworking doctor.
The association has called on the media to exercise caution in reporting on sensitive matters involving patient confidentiality and the actions of medical personnel. They also expressed disapproval of the public interrogation of their member.
DATTH urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information on social media and to cease the wrongful vilification of doctors at Tamale Teaching Hospital.
While awaiting the findings of an investigative committee, DATTH reiterates its unwavering support for their colleague, emphasizing his exemplary leadership and stating that his “only crime was to point out problems in the facility needing urgent attention to improve care.” The association firmly stands in solidarity with their colleague and will oppose any attempts to hinder his ability to perform his duties.
In a strong statement, DATTH warns that if the trend of lacking basic healthcare requirements persists, leading to the vilification of healthcare personnel for poor outcomes, they will consider actions that could disrupt industrial harmony. The association has also announced an emergency meeting of all doctors at Tamale Teaching Hospital to discuss their options.
The press release was signed by DATTH and distributed to various stakeholders, including the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), the Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO, the GMA Northern Division Chairman, and all media houses.
