The Ghana Police Service has arrested one person, Michael Allotey, for possessing a weapon at the St. Theresa School polling station in the Okaikwei South Constituency in Accra.
According to information gathered, Michael Allotey was seen at the polling station after verbally attacking an official of the Electoral Commission, with a gun in his possession in the early hours of today, before voting commenced at Centre 2 in the Okaikwei South Constituency.
Following a tip-off after the altercation, it was discovered that the individual, a National Democratic Congress (NDC) party agent, was allegedly carrying a pistol.
The police arrested Michael Allotey and transported him to the police station for thorough investigations.
It will be recalled that Superintendent Francis Mensah, the Asesewa Police Commander and Chairman of the District Election Security Taskforce, cautioned against possession of weapons at polling centres during the elections.
He stressed that under no circumstances should individuals carry weapons to protect themselves, the ballot box, or intimidate electoral officers.
He assured the public that the police are adequately trained and prepared to ensure the safety of ballot boxes and voters before, during, and after the elections.
At the press briefing, Chief Inspector Priscilla Nkrumah Preprah said the police will arrest all persons seen possessing firearms during this election, as they are on the alert to restore sanity and peace at various polling stations.
