Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) has announced a sponsorship agreement with the organisers of the nation's flagship tennis tournament, the McDan West African Tennis Open Championship which gets underway today at the Accra sports stadium.
The deal which will see UMB become an official sponsor of the competition was announced last Friday at the UMB head office in Accra.
The McDan Tennis Open Chief Organiser, Nathaniel Attoh explained that as part of the partnership UMB's corporate logo will be displayed at courtside on panels throughout the competition which ends on Sunday.
The Director, Marketing and Communications of the bank, Yvonne Botchey said her outfit's core value, SPEED, an acronym which stands for Speed, Passion, Excellence, Ethics and Diligence is synonymous with the sport of tennis hence their decision to sponsor the competition.
She explained, “For us, at Universal Merchant Bank we are proud to be a sponsor of the McDan Open West Africa tournament. “We are an institution that is committed to healthy living, exercise and fun, so as a natural extension of that commitment to partner with the McDan Open West Africa tournament.”
“As a proud Ghanaian institution, we apply initiatives that are aimed at developing and nurturing Ghanaian talents and the McDan Open is doing just that for our young budding Ghanaian tennis stars,” Madam Botchey added.
Thirty-two players, comprising 24 seeds and 8 qualifiers will be involved in the main draw of the competition today.
The eight qualifiers were drawn from a two-day qualifying contest involving 64 players which was yet to be completed at the time of going to press yesterday.
