European Parliament Delegation strengthens EU-Ghana ties during official visit

Six members of the European Parliament (MEPs) visited Ghana (October 28-29) as part of an official mission that reinforced the EU-Ghana partnership and inter-parliamentary relations.

The delegation was led by Committee Chair, David McAllister, and EU Ambassador to Ghana,  Rune Skinnebach. The participating MEPs included Sebastião Bugalho, Christophe Gomart, Željana Zovko, Marta Temido, and Sebastian Tynkkynen. The mission held constructive discussions with Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, members of  the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, and former diplomats at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The visit confirmed the deep partnership between the EU and Ghana, grounded in shared interests in regional peace and stability, and equitable trade. McAllister noted the democratic maturity that characterizes Ghana in the region, as well as shared interests in multilateralism and a rules-based international order.

MEP David McAllister confirmed the close bounds between the EU and Ghana: “We are closely interlinked. What happens in Ghana, therefore matters to us in Europe. The EU stands by Ghana’s side to play a constructive role in keeping West-Africa stable.”

Mr Bagbin commended the European Union for its continued role as a key partner to Ghana, highlighting cooperation in areas such as security, trade, sustainability, and the promotion of a rules-based international order.

The visit featured a field visit to the DEK Vaccines project site – a Global Gateway flagship that will help to establish local vaccine manufacturing capacities.

The mission also interacted with students of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), an opportunity for discussing the role of the EU in supporting Ghanaian youth, and the impact of geo-political developments on Ghana. The event, attended by members of the EU Youth Sounding Board, and representatives from the National Youth Authority, focused on the EU’s role in empowering Ghana’s next generation.
