Black Queens defender Josephine Bonsu says representing Ghana’s national women’s football team is her way of honouring her father.
Bonsu, who was born in Germany, played a key role in Ghana’s bronze medal success at the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and also featured in the team’s qualification for the 2026 edition of the tournament.
Ghana sealed qualification with a dominant 7-0 aggregate win over Egypt, including a 4-0 triumph at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The 26-year-old defender, who competed in both legs of the tie, described her experience of playing in front of Ghanaian fans for the first time as unforgettable.
"It’s a dream to play for the national team. I’m just giving back to my father, playing for the national team. It means a lot," Bonsu said.
Reflecting on the moment she stepped onto the pitch at the Accra Sports Stadium, she added:
"When I was walking through the tunnel and saw the fans, I was like, is this even real life? It was so loud. The atmosphere was just outstanding, and even in the middle of the game, I found myself looking around and enjoying it. This is just a dream."
