Minister of Government Communications Urges Merit-Based Selection
Meanwhile, many voices have been heard in relation to categories of players to be invited into the team and another minister has also shared his opinion.
The Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, urged a merit-based approach in selecting diaspora players for Ghana’s 2026 World Cup campaign, insisting that those with superior quality should be considered regardless of their previous decisions to decline national invitations.
Ghana’s qualification for the global showpiece has revived discussions about expanding the selection pool to include foreign-born players who did not feature during the qualifying phase.
Among those reportedly open to representing Ghana are Crystal Palace striker Eddie Nketiah, Nottingham Forest winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Brazilian club Grêmio forward Francis Amuzu.
Others, such as AZ Alkmaar’s Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro, Como’s Jayden Addai, and Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, have also been linked with potential national team switches.
Addressing Parliament, Kwakye Ofosu cautioned against emotional decision-making and urged the technical team to prioritise ability and contribution over past incidents.
“Some players indeed turned us down in the past, possibly because they were waiting to see if countries with a higher football profile would call them up. In areas where we are weak, if there are players who have demonstrated greater ability than the current options, they should be considered on merit. If we act out of emotion, we may make decisions that will come back to haunt us,” he said.
The draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place on December 5, 2025, in Washington, where Ghana will discover its group-stage opponents.
