J in G Corporate Retreat Centre last week organized and hosted a half day, high level dialogue on the theme: “The Attitude of the Ghanaian Worker and its Impact on Productivity and Economic Performance.”
The event was sponsored by Vanguard Assurance, Ghana’s oldest privately owned indigenous insurance company, and it convened labour, business and industry leaders to examine how workplace attitudes affect the performance of firms and the national economy.
The event comprised a keynote address delivered by renowned labour consultant, CEO of Gamey and Gamey, and former Minister of Employment, Mr Austin Gamey; and discussions led by Dr Gideon Amenyedor, Founder and CEO of J in G Corporate Retreat Centre and Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry as well as Madam Vivian Serwa Adu, founder of Rose Aluminum. The discussions were followed by a question and answer session involving all the participants.
The event was chaired by Mr Stephen Miezan, National Chairman of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Delivering his keynote address, Mr Austin Gamey pointed out that a company’s customers ultimately pay the salaries of its workers, and warned that strikes and poor service delivery drive those customers to competitors, damaging the firm’s bottom line. Mr Gamey urged workers to cultivate excellence and called on corporate leaders to adopt a gentle, empathetic approach to managing their staff.
As a discussant, Dr Amenyador identified and praised several virtues of the Ghanaian worker – most notably adaptability and communal spirit – while calling for a decisive break from the tendency for lateness, a mentality commonly referred to as “Ghana time.”
On her part, Madam Vivian Adu urged Ghanaian workers to embrace an ownership mindset towards their duties and an uncompromising attitude of excellence to enhance competitiveness.
The dialogue concluded with a collective appeal to workers, employers and policy makers to commit to disciplined time-keeping, stronger ownership of tasks and a culture of excellence – actions the speakers said are essential to raising productivity and driving sustainable economic growth in Ghana.
J in G Corporate Retreat Centre, presented a formal citation to Mr Miezan, the event’s Chairman, for his outstanding service to the business community. Vanguard Assurance, the event’s sponsor was commended for its reliable service and its widely acclaimed 24 hour claims processing and settlement initiative, a measure the speakers cited as an example of customer-oriented operational excellence.
J in G Corporate Retreat Centre, which hosted the event is rapidly garnering a deserved reputation as a preferred venue for cerebral corporate events. It has fully equipped retreat halls for hosting corporate/institutional management, strategy and sales retreats and workshops. Situated in a serene location, away from the distractions of the urban bustle, it has nature – aligned recreational spaces – including an outside spacious events ground.
